define: fatty

"So, I'm really curious, what's with the name, Fatty?"

What a good question! We've just realized we haven't formally addressed this little nickname in the last ten months of our adoption journey. So without further ado...

First, you should know that I am obsessed with nicknames. There aren't many people in my inner circle that I don't have a nickname for. I just go there. Right away. So, if you become my friend or family, get ready; there's a nickname in your future. (Josh and I have great nicknames for one another and they are uniquely ours, which makes them super special).

Nicknames are my favorite because they are affectionate terms of endearment. When I call my sister or friend by her nickname, what I'm really saying is, "I know you and I love you". In my mind, nicknames are like a verbal hug! Sometimes nicknames are based on an inside joke or a good story, or a fun variation of your real name. Sometimes they hint at physical appearance, a meaningful memory or family of origin. I know that some people have been given nicknames they hate or nicknames that are laced with hints of sarcasm or slight digs. Rest assured this is not and will not ever be the case in the Mann Fam.

When it comes to Fatty there isn't a deep story or a prophetic bent. Sorry to disappoint you! When Josh and I were first married, we used to refer to our future kid as, "Shooter", but somewhere along the way, that faded. When talking about our Ethiopian baby, we knew we were going to keep the gender open, so we had to call the little guy or girl something besides, "our Ethiopian baby". Fatty was gender neutral and being chubby is one of the most endearing qualities about babies. Plus, in all honesty, we're prepared for the reality that Fatty may be the exact opposite of chubby when we are first matched with him/ her...so maybe it is a prophetic nickname. :-)

As we've been waiting to bring Fatty home, this name has turned in to something that allows us, our families, our friends, students we serve and others who love us, to feel connected with our child. When our friends ask, "How is the wait for Fatty going?" or "Have you bought Fatty any onesies yet?", we feel understood, affirmed; like our friends and family are standing with us. When you call our Ethiopian baby, Fatty, we feel like you are cheering us on, walking alongside us and believing with us that this is God's gracious plan for our family. We love it when you call our baby, Fatty (sheesh, I'm one mushy momma-to-be).

We are really excited to finally announce Fatty's real name to you just as soon as we pass court (about 2-3 months after we get our referral). At that point, we will be too excited about his real name to call him anything else. Plus, in about 13 seconds I'm sure a new nickname or two will emerge, so stay tuned.

In conclusion, allow me to introduce you to my "little" brother, Nathan, whom I've called Kush all his life. I mean, does this guy look like a "Kush" to you? Of course not. He looks more like a "Stud" or a "Mucho Suave". Kush's nickname has been around since the early nineties and none of us can remember where or why it originated. When Kush became a teenager I wondered aloud to Josh, "How much longer do you think Kush will allow me to call him that, especially in public?". Josh responded by saying it's not so much the name in and of itself, but how we say it and what we mean by it. If we say it like a little pet name that makes him feel young and small, then he would have outgrown it long ago. But said with all of the love and respect and admiration it's meant to communicate, it's a name that will last a lifetime.

So it's Fatty for now!

Tell me, are you a nickname person? Why or why not? What is your nickname and who calls you by it? Do you have a nickname for someone or does someone have one for you that wouldn't make sense to a casual passerby if they heard it without the back story? I'm dying to know! Fill me in!

I have one. When I was in the 3rd or 4th grade there was a bunch of Krista's, Kristan's, Christopher, or Chrissy's. So I told my friend's I wanted to be just Chris and they laughed at me and never called me that. I told my best friend in High school that and she said she Loved it and from that day on that is what she calls me. Hardly anyone calls me that but I for some reason love it.
My Dad calls me Chrissers which he is the only person in the world who is allowed to call me that :)

Chels- that is hilarious. Operation: Kush+Chani=Love is still going strong! :-)

Christy- Ohhhh, you bring up a good point! Sometimes we have nicknames we love but only certain, specific people are allowed to call us by them!

Sooo ever since middle school my friends called me "Bek". My family always called me "Beks". But then I learned how to spell and realized there is simply no K in my name, so we switched to "Bex" (you may be surprised to know it was Fowler who popularized this among the SAC staff). So that's my story. Also, my sister used to call me Boob. So...

To my family and our old neighbors, I am Katiebugs. One word. Old spelling of my name. I have always loved to dance and am constantly moving around so my old neighbor, Syl, started calling me Katiebugs as she said I had bugs in my pants. It stuck and she even addressed a check for my high school graduation to "Katiebugs Ober".

Also, people call me Kate a lot, which I love but only if you know me well. Hate it if you don't. I find people start calling me Kate when we reach a certain intimacy in our relationship and then they never call me Kaytee again. And some friends never call me Kate because, for some reason, our friendship never gets very intimate.

Also, Glendon has about 10 different nicknames for me but his current favorite is BC. It is short for Baby Cakes. :o)

Wow. I had a lot to say! Love that you do nicknames, Bex!

PSmitty! I miss your face, your voice, your laugh, your stories, YOU. Welcome home my long-lost friend! I know, Kush is a looker. I'm sure he would love to do a give a shirt shoot. He's obsessed with the new blue one! And, I'm with you on Fatty's gender. :-) We'll see, huh!? We should treat ourselves if we're right.

Kaytee Rose. I love those stories! Kate is a great name for an intimate friendship. I've long noticed Tess calls you Kate. Josh and I have about 5 nicknames we use regularly, too. :-) So fun.

Erik calls me neens. My mom calls me Mikken or Ninamor (Norwegian mumbo jumbo) my dad sometimes calls me smooken. People LOVE to mess with my actual name and even mispronounce it. My childhood buddy calls me Nine. I get Neeners, Nine-a (I have one friend who like to combine that with a female body part bc it rhymes...I know, gross). Another friend calls me 7,8,9-er. Wes just calls me Baby, and I call him Johnny( ok not really...I was just having a Dirty Dancing flashback). Is that enough nicknames for you? :)

hahahaha NINA. Such a hilarious bunch of nicknames- you must be well-loved! I think I've maybe called you Neeners in my head once....hope that's not too weird. Does Erik have any nicknames for you?!

OH we LOVE nicknames... we have lots and lots of them too... for us and for the kiddos... Thanks for letting us "in" by knowing and using Fatty's nickname... and calling ya'll Fatty's mama & daddy!! =) (My nicknames: Meesh (still sticks - in high school there were 5 Michelle's in the band, and one day we all picked a vowel - I got the good name I think - Mash, Meesh, Mish, Mosh, Mush... yep...I like Meesh). Dad called me Pooker Pooh (until he gave me one of those autograph animals for my birthday that all my friends signed, and then he signed "pooh" by its rear...and I was appalled...but still a funny story). Oh the fun of it all!!! =)

O.K. the comments took me down memory lane. First I was like, "No, not many nicknames. . ." and then as I read all the comments I was like, "Oh yeah, and friends called me this, and he called me that. . . ." So, here's my list: In my family we used to play around with our names backward, mine was Refinnej Niglub. Awesome!! My brother shortened it and called me Ref for a long time - not so much now, but I still love it when he pulls it out.

In high school my best friend used to run down the hall yelling, "Jeffineffineffineffiner." That got shorted to Jef, with one f, and that still sticks with a small group of friends.

My track friends called me Birdie -long story on that one.

You know my season as "Giraffe" to 100s of kids, who still think of me as that in their head, but rarely say it out loud. Every now and then I mention it to someone and they sheepishly smile and say, "Yeah, that's always the first name I think of for you."

My college friends call me Niffer, and my kids call me Mom, but never, ever, ever, have I been Jenny. Unless you wanted to make me mad. Which a college friend did. And he called me Jenny so often that it stuck, and we laugh - and he's the only one allowed to call me that in the world.

Oh, NOW I see! Awesome! Glad you linked me to this post. Yeah, all my kids had/have nicknames. Liam just rolls his eyes when I call him Hounddog (or Houndie for short :), but what can I say? He's my little Huckleberry Hounddog!

Love you!
